Casual monkey boots in cognac brown with thick laces

Smooth, unembossed leather is usually a hallmark of formal shoes, and embossed leather could have made things more casual here. But in my view, the unembossed smooth leather puts the effect of the color front and center and feels very special in this way. The clearly visible metal eyelets, the thick laces, and the strong double welt seam still emphasize the casual character that the boots have even without these features. In addition, these listed features project a rugged outward appearance.

So overall, a pair of beautiful, casual boots with a very successful look. You can wear these monkey boots quite well with light jeans because of the light color. With very dark jeans, I would choose a different color; for example, reddish-brown or dark-brown monkey boots fit better.

Mein subjektiver Eindruck:
Formal: 2 / 5
Alltag: 5 / 5
Kunstvoll: 3 / 5

Special features

When it comes to the upper leather, monkey boots have very strong similarities to sneakers, especially in the lacing area, while in the sole area they can be very classic with the presence of a heel, which is missing on many sneakers. In this way, I see monkey boots as the more formal sneakers, even though there is also this difference in shaft height.

Maybe that’s why I like monkey boots relatively well, even though I personally don’t like sneakers. Of course, monkey boots don’t look as elegant compared to derby boots or other boots. Still, you have a few ways to make monkey boots not look as chunky as most sneakers:

  • through heels
  • through outlines and shape
  • through welts and welt seams

I think that in many cases, certain details can simply determine whether you like a shoe or not. And if you’re looking for good casual shoes, then monkey boots are an excellent candidate—even if you don’t like sneakers, and if you do like sneakers, then even more so.

Comparison with sneakers

Here, for comparison, you can see a pair of sneakers, though in a somewhat different variant, so the similarity to monkey boots is not quite as obvious. From this sneaker example, you can again see confirmed how simply they are made and, due to the missing heel, relatively chunky. From an aesthetic point of view, I would personally clearly prefer the monkey boots above for everyday wear and would wear the sneakers only for doing sports.
